L'abbattimentoThe DowningDer Abschuss

Of the original formation of twenty-eight bombers, two made early returns and did not take part in the raid. Flying in the second attack unit, designated “Easy Flight”, “51” was the last of the twenty-six aircraft as the formation made its way from Stara Fužina to the Weißensee turn point.

While in the vicinity of Dogna, just south of Pontebba, “51” was struck by enemy flak. The post-mission analysis of flak specifically noted that the area around Dogna was particularly dangerous — two other aircraft had recently been lost there — and that the German anti-aircraft crews were “experienced and capable”.In der Nähe von Dogna, knapp südlich von Pontebba, wurde die „51" von feindlicher Flak getroffen.

According to witness statements — 2nd Lt John K. May and Sgt Joseph L. Orth of aircraft 42-51987 — “51” suffered multiple catastrophic strikes and, at the time, no parachutes were seen. After the war, 2nd Lt Colvin himself gave a statement clarifying what happened on board after the strike and adding information he had received from the Germans after his capture.

In Pontebba the search for the airmen began at once. 2nd Lt Colvin was captured soon after parachuting into Pietratagliata, a hamlet to the south: he was the sole survivor. U.S. records list him in two camps — Stalag Luft III at Sagan-Silesia (now in Poland), evacuated at the end of January 1945 as the Soviets advanced, and then the Nuremberg-Langwasser camp in Bavaria, until his liberation by American troops in mid-April.

The most detailed account of what happened to the airmen after the downing was written by Don Battista Boria, parish priest of Pontebba, at the request of the Allied Military Command.

Archdiocese of Udine — Subject: aircraft accident of 20 February 1945. At the request of the AMC representative I give below an account of the accident, particularly concerning the recovery of the bodies of the fallen airmen.

On 20 February 1945, at about 14:00, a four-engined American aircraft received a direct hit near San Rocco di Pontebba and fell in pieces in various parts of the commune of Pontebba.

The airmen were seen to jump with their parachutes, but only some opened: a few fell with the parachute still folded, while others were caught in parts of the burning plane. Of those whose parachutes opened, only one was taken prisoner by the Germans; others, who fell in the mountains, perhaps escaped capture, or probably died of wounds or exposure — nothing more was ever heard of them. Of those whose parachutes failed to open, one came down in the cemetery of San Rocco and was picked up dead by the Germans. Four others fell, also dead, into the Fella torrent; a few minutes later they received a blessing from the priest Mario Simeoni. Three others fell dead on the slopes of Monte Pocet; still others were entangled beneath the flaming wreckage.

On the evening of 20 February the Germans collected five bodies of the victims and brought them outside the church of Sant'Antonio, abandoning them in a pitiable state on the snow without even covering them. The next day the bodies were still there and no one thought to bury them. On 22 February I went to the German Berater, protesting in the name of the population against this inhuman treatment and demanding their burial in consecrated ground. The local military commander agreed to come to my house with the Berater to settle the matter. It was agreed that they should be buried in a common grave in the cemetery of Sant'Antonio, but without the population present and without ceremony, because they were considered “terrorists”. That evening the five bodies were moved to the ante-chapel; a sixth was added, found by the Germans on the slopes of Monte Pocet.

On 23 February 1945, at 08:00, in the presence of the German commander, the six bodies — after receiving the last rites from me — were placed in the common grave. Of the six, only three were identified by the Germans, who complained that the identity discs of the others had been removed by civilians. Even the three who were identified were lowered into the common grave without any personal word being placed beside them.

Meanwhile my assistant, Don Mario Simeoni, unknown to the Germans, found another body on Monte Pocet and buried it on the spot with Catholic rites. Three days later another body was found on Monte Pocet, which Don Simeoni — with the help of the Young Catholics of Pietratagliata and with great difficulty — buried near the others. These were identified and are still recognisable today. Later I was able to examine the log of the destroyed aircraft and to collect the names of those aboard.

Erzdiözese Udine — Betreff: Flugzeugunglück vom 20. Februar 1945.
