Durante la Seconda guerra mondiale Pontebba fu un importante nodo ferroviario per i trasporti verso sud, in Italia, e verso est, in Austria, oltre che sede di presidio. After the armistice of 8 September 1943 the area came under German control and was absorbed into the Operational Zone of the Alpine Foothills (Alpenvorland). At the time of the Bolzano mission the area was controlled by units led by SS-Obersturmführer Erich Kuhbandner.Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs war Pontebba ein wichtiger Eisenbahnknoten für den Transport nach Süden, nach Italien, und nach Osten, nach Österreich, sowie eine Garnisonsstadt. Giovanni Grillo, residente a Pontebba, lavorava come deviatore alla stazione ferroviaria. Il 30 settembre 1944, a grave rischio personale, aprì un vagone permettendo la fuga di due soldati che venivano trasferiti verso est. Scoperto, fu giustiziato dalle truppe tedesche il 3 ottobre 1944.Giovanni Grillo, a resident of Pontebba, worked as a signalman at the railway station. On 30 September 1944, at great personal risk, he opened a rail wagon allowing two soldiers being moved east to escape. He was discovered and executed by German troops on 3 October 1944.Giovanni Grillo, ein Einwohner von Pontebba, arbeitete als Weichensteller am Bahnhof. Am 30. September 1944 öffnete er unter großer persönlicher Gefahr einen Waggon und ermöglichte zwei nach Osten verlegten Soldaten die Flucht. Er wurde entdeckt und am 3. Oktober 1944 von deutschen Truppen hingerichtet.

Una compagnia di volontari spagnoli fu aggregata al 59° Gebirgsjäger-Regiment della 24ª Waffen-Gebirgs-(Karstjäger)-Division delle SS. Operò a Villach e Pontebba, e poi a Tolmezzo, anche in funzioni antipartigiane. The original monument, placed at Pietratagliata, now stands in San Rocco Cemetery alongside the monument to “51”.Am Tag nach Kriegsende starben dreiundzwanzig Pioniere der 626 Field Squadron, Royal Engineers, bei der Reparatur einer Brücke in Pietratagliata.
